PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

There are so many things going on dressage wise that it is hard to know where to start! SWVADA just had its 3rd schooling show of the season. Thanks go to Sarah Denham and Rebecca Splan for all their hard work on putting this show together. Along with a capable group of volunteers, they were able to put on a terrific show on a less than ideal day (it was REALLY hot). This month SWVADA is sponsoring a two day clinic with judge and clinician Amy McElroy. The dates for this are Sept. 23 and 24. This should be a fun and informative two days, so please plan on attending. Look for more info in this newsletter. On Sept. 16 and 17 the USDF is sponsoring an adult clinic with Jan Eberling. This is being held in Boyd, MD. This would also be a wonderful learning experience for all ages and levels. You can find more info by going to the USDF website at www.usdf.org. Click on adult clinics and you can find all the information you need to audit this event. Congratulations to SWVADA member Sue Cooper on being selected to represent the Prix St. Georges level. It is a long drive, but I am sure it will be worth the trip!

There are only three more months left in SWVADA's calendar year. I know this may seem early, but it is time to start thinking of our board for 2007. We will be electing the new board in November. If you are interested in helping SWVADA continue to grow, this is the time to step up. I invite you to attend a board meeting or contact a board member to see what the job entails. This is your chance to help us make SWVADA the organization that you want it to be. Our next board meeting is Sept. 18. Please contact me (sgdallas@ntelos.net) if you are interested in attending. We would love to have you join us!

~Susan Dallas

2007 SWVADA MEMBERSHIP

Well, like another school year, Christmas, show season, etc., that time is almost upon us again – membership renewal. It’s hard to believe that summer is more than half over (thank goodness!) and the new school year will be starting soon.

The SWVADA/VADA/USDF 2007 year starts December 1, 2006. I know it’s hard to think about joining things for 2007 now (like buying winter clothes in August), but you can beat the rush, get it out of the way, don’t have to scrounge up the money during the holidays and while doing Christmas shopping. Everyone is very busy around Thanksgiving and Christmas. We all have good intentions of sending our dues in, but it gets laid by the wayside with all the other things to do. So, if you’ll fill out the membership form, write out your check, and send them to me, IT’S ALL DONE! Now doesn’t that make you feel good. One less thing to think about later on.

We at SWVADA hope to see all of you again. I’ll be waiting for your envelopes. Hope the remainder of your summer is great!

Amy would like to have a kind of rouns table discussion at dinner with riders and auditors…an additional great way to learn.

Old Business: Young Rider Championships – attended by a number of SWVADA members as volunteers. Nancy Stine wanted to report she found the show to be very well run, had very nice horses and riders, saw nice team support for competitors from competitors. Board members volunteered to fill most of the empty spaces. Have a ton of junior riders. Will have snacks and drinks available for purchase. Volunteers will be fed lunch.

New Business: Sponsorship for BLM’s – A motion was made by Gary Goodale that SWVADA be a day sponsor for BLM’s at the Virginia Horse Center at a cost of $200.00. The motion was seconded by Sue Cooper. Passed unanimously.

  • September 23rd & 24th Clinic with Amy Joseph McElroy

"Solving Problems with Arena Exercises and Improving Rider Effectiveness". To be held at Chimney Hill Equestrian Center in Salem, VA. Cost is $50 (40 minute lesson). About the clinician: Amy is an “r” judge and instructor from Aiken, S.C. Having earned her USDF bronze and silver medals, Amy is currently working on acquiring scores for her gold medal. She has coached 10 riders to their bronze medals and 4 to their silver medals. Amy loves teaching adult amateurs and promises to make the clinic a refreshing educational experience for both riders and auditors!! For more information, contact Annette Massey-Shaw at (276) 656-1112 or saxonvale@kimbanet.com.

Help support SWVADA's burgeoning clinic program!

Amy Joseph McElroy's clinic is one of SWVADA's big events this year. Last year's membership survey revealed a large number of requests for more clinic opportunities. We hope to see strong support of the clinic by all SWVADA members. The clinician will be mic'd, so come audit if you are not planning to ride! This will be the "test" to see if SWVADA should pursue more clinics for the membership. The Board is now in the process of developing a clinic program for next year. To ensure SWVADA can proceed planning these clinics, we must have the support of riders and auditors. Your presence could make the difference!

Just a note to all: The clinician has requested a group dinner with an open forum discussion the evening of September 23rd. ALL members are invited to attend. Please show your support in one way or another. I appreciate any and all feedback, as well as any thoughts on a meeting place as I am unfamiliar to the Salem/Roanoke area.

Wendy’s clinics are always enjoyable, and always teach riders things they never felt before. It is well worth every minute, and every dollar. Please schedule as early as possible so Wendy can make plans to come. Without enough riders, she cannot schedule a clinic.

  • 3-Day Clinic with Goran Liljestam on September 22-24 Clinic to be held in Haymarket. See flyer for more information.

  • It Truly Is An Honor Just To Be Nominated!! Once again its time to submit nominations for the SHEL GAFFORD MEMORIAL AWARD for EXCELLENCE IN SPORTSMANSHIP. Please take a few minutes to think about your friends and fellow VADA members. There are surely several who exhibit the qualities of good sportsmanship. If you know someone who is always willing to help a fellow competitor; who cares more for their horse’s welfare than for winning a trophy; and/or who values the judges’ criticisms rather than complaining about them, because they really want to improve their riding. These are people who deserve to be recognized for the fine example they set for us all. Please take a few minutes to send in a nomination. Your prose doesn’t have to be worthy of a Pulitzer, just honest and to the point. Remember there’s a 200 word limit on all nominations, (this is already 144 words long not counting the title!) so it shouldn’t take you long at all. If you value sportsmanlike behavior, and if you’re tired of cut-throat competition, then please recognize those you know who uplift our sport. We need to honor those of our members who bring honor to our sport. Please take the time! It would be a sad commentary if we had no members worthy of nomination! Email your nominations to Lweswt101@aol.com, or fax them to 804-994-0268 (press send button as soon as the machine message starts), or snail mail them to:
    Louise West
    29400 Secretariat Rd.
    Ruther Glen, VA 225436-4128

October 15, 2006 is the stated deadline for nominations, but there is some “wiggle room”. Call or email me if you need more time. (My phone and fax numbers are the same.)

Just for Fun

Nancy and Sean at Oak Hill Stables hosted an Equine Sports Massage course in August. On the last of the eight day course the instructor, and a dozen students from Europe, Canada and the U.S. treated Junior to a new paint job!
