PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Hi all!

Though it's hard to believe, the membership year for SWVADA (Dec. 1 - Nov. 30) is rapidly drawing to a close.  While there are several important events still ahead, it's time to think about renewing your membership for the 2005 competition year.  Please visit the SWVADA website (www.swvada.com) and download a membership form.  Pat Nelson is the membership chairman and is ready to accept membership applications. (Thanks, Pat!)

Nominations to the SWVADA Board are currently open.  If you are interested in running for the Board, please send Harriet Keys (skfarms@cox.net) a brief biographical paragraph no later than Friday, Oct. 29th.  Harriet has kindly consented to put together a "snail mail" newsletter that will include, among other things, a ballot for the Board and information regarding the annual Year End Celebration.  (Thanks, Harriet!)  Please be on the look out for this special edition of the newsletter.

Upcoming events include the final SWVADA Schooling show - to be held at GHPEC this Saturday, October 30.  Contact Pam Bennington (pambenning@aol.com) if you can help out.  Also, we are still looking forward to "Up the Levels with Judy Westenhoefer" on November 6 at Chimney Hill Equestrian Center. Contact Laura Nelson (540.382-0078) for more information.  And finally, on November 27, SWVADA will be hosting a free clinic with Debbie Bowman at Chimney Hill.  Contact Annette Massey-Shaw (saxonvale@kimbanet.com) for more information.

It's been a fantastic year and it's ending on a high note - hope to see you "out and about" at one of these upcoming events!

Beckie

VADA BOARD MEETING
September 26, 2006

Members Present: Tammy Hryczaniuk (FR), Capri Winser (CC), Diane Hanson-Johnson (CC), Cheryl Painter (NE), Debra O’Bier (CC), Jessie Ginsburg (Nova), Randi Joslyn (Nova), Carolyn “Dilly” Jackson (Nova), Sandy Johnson, Holly Veloso (SW), Beth Jandl (CH), Debbie Bowman (CH), Sharon Ackley (FR), Susan Dallas (SW), Harriet Keyes (SW), Beth Rippel (SE), Donna Vance (SE), Bettina Longaker (CH), Jane Palmer (Shen).

1. Minutes: The last meeting was held at the Celebrity Freestyle. No minutes were read.

2. Treasurer’s Report: Tina has received $91,000 in entries for the BLMs. VADA is sending 7 teams to the Region I Team Championships in October.

3. Budget Committee: Jessie Ginsburg explained that in preparing the budget, expenses from prior years were categorized and a chart was organized to track income and expenses compared to other years.

4. Chapter Grants: The Charlottesville chapter will have a Musical Freestyle clinic in Feb. 2005. NeVADA is planning a clinic with Paul
Belasik, Dec. 11 and 12. All chapters were urged to submit their application for the VADA grant money for 2004 before the end of the
year. Plans put together in 2004 can be used in 2005. Applications should be sent to Beth Rippel. ShenVADA, SW and Fredericksburg intend to submit applications soon. Central has already used their grant.

5. Round Robins: Contacts and follow-ups with the volunteer clinicians should be done in a timely fashion. There was discussion on using some kind of contract to make the process more formal. Tina will formulate a contract.

6. Web Site: Randy Joslyn advised that the VADA Web site has been restored after suffering some damage from hurricane power loss. A list of trainers will be put on the web site, probably listed by category. VADA would not be endorsing any individual trainer. If trainers are linked to their own site, a fee of $10.00 could be charged. Tina will put information about it in the Virginia Horse Journal. Such a list would help to generate more traffic on our web site. The VADA site will be updated for 2005 as information comes in from the chapters.

7. Chapter News: Harriet Keyes reported that SWVADA had a very successful adult camp in September at Fancy Hill at Natural Bridge with 19 attendees. It was held over 4 days, Thurs. to Sunday afternoon. It was the ninth year in a row for the camp.
In spite of the rains of Hurricane Charlie, SE successfully carried on their recognized show with 40 rides.
NOVA had its Sept. show last weekend. They were hit by Hurricane Ivan  but went forward and everything went well with a full show. Nova’s Schooling Show championships will take place on Nov. 6 at Morven Park.
The double recognized shows of Fredricksburg and Charlottesville held at Rosemont in September were very successful. A breed show on Friday will probably be added next year, prior to the Saturday and Sunday dressage shows.

8. Awards Luncheon: Beth Rippel confirmed that the awards luncheon will be on Jan. 23, 2005 in Ashland, VA at the Virginia Crossings resort. The same price as last year will be charged. She urged chapters to start
pushing for attendance.Kathy Mathers has been nominated for the USDF Region I Award -- USEF Level Competition which will be voted on at the Region I meeting Nov. 11th. Debbie Bowman moved to give her VADA’s support, which passed unanimously. It was also moved by Nova’s president, Carolyn Jackson, to nominate Dianne Boyd for the non-rider award. Carolyn will write it up.
The motion passed unanimously. Chapters should be prepared to name volunteer of the year, newsletter editor, and president for VADA’s year-end awards.

9. The Region I Fall meeting is scheduled for Nov. 7 at Morven Park. Tina encouraged attendance by VADA members. Championship shows will be eviewed for feedback. Riders should fill out evaluation forms at such shows so problems can be corrected.

10. The annual USDF Meeting will be held in Lexington, KY in late Nov., early Dec. VADA’s President, Tina Longaker, and Vice President, Beth Jandl, are planning to attend. Several from the VADA Board are also planning to attend. As representatives, Tina and Beth will receive $500.00 from VADA for expenses. VADA gets 1 vote for every 25 members.

11. Region I Adult Team Challenge Event At Morven Park: There will be seven teams this year from the VADA. Jessie Ginsburg suggested that a standard prize list be established for next year to make the entry process easier. The Region I website should have the information on its web site. The competition is expected to have 5 rings. The majority of riders are from VADA/Nova, but we would like to get more members from other chapters involved.

12. BLMS: Beth Jandl announced that all of the prize moneys have come in, but there are still sponsorships available and gave a sponsor update. There will be 1,075 rides. Holly Veloso reported the status of volunteers and Sharon Ackley reported on awards, trophys and ribbons. Dianne Boyd, Show Manager, presented an update on all aspects of the show, including the Friday and Saturday night activities, judges, hospitality for the judges, and the judges baskets.

Meeting adjourned.

Respectfully Submitted,
Jane Palmer

Shel Gafford Award Nominations

Here are the nominations for the 2004 Shel Gafford Award. Please read each one carefully and cast your vote for the one you feel best exemplifies the characteristics of good sportsmanship, generosity of spirit, and devotion to the sport of Dressage that were so much a part of Shel’s character. Each chapter is to collect and tally the votes of their members and report those totals by January 5, 2005.
Congratulations to all the nominees and Thank You all for your contributions to our sport!

Send your email vote to Beckie Mitchell.

Kasey Blanton (Southeast):   With deepest admiration, I would like to take this time to nominate Kasey Blanton for this award.  This is Kasey’s first year riding with the SVDA, and never have I seen her more bound and determined to work hard and succeed at a sport that she has fallen head over heels with.  She has climbed from Intro to Training 3 & 4 this year with all her scores in the sixties and seventies.  All this she has done on a horse she helped break and train, trading stall mucking, fence painting and repairs around the barn, for lessons.

Kasey loves doing volunteer work for the SVDA and is currently helping me break another youngster.  I have never met a harder working, more determined and serious sixteen year old rider that Kasey.  She loves the sport of dressage riding and welcomes all the challenges that it brings.  She is truly intrigued with the musical freestyles and it wouldn’t surprise me a bit if she goes in that direction.  She is already putting music with the tapes her father makes of her shows that are in perfect harmony with her horse’s movement.  What a super junior rider!      Nominated by Karen Hemperley

Barbara Ellis (Fredericksburg):    The Fredericksburg Chapter of VADA is blessed with having Barbara Ellis as an active member for many, many years.  She is truly a rare individual with intelligence, kindness, generosity, and graciousness all combined in one very special friend.  Although Barbara is the owner of a professional dressage barn, she still manages to donate tremendous hours to VADAF.  No job ever goes begging thanks to Barb.  She undertakes each task with remarkable dedication, enthusiasm and just plain hard work.  The majority of our educational offerings,  mounted and unmounted, are held at her beautiful facility.  Always opening her farm, and many times her heart, to club members, it is not unusual to hear of a chapter member with a sick or injured horse and Barb has offered to help in some fashion.  It may be having the vet meet them at her farm or perhaps supplying much needed emergency medications in the middle of the night.  It may just be a shoulder to cry on.  Although Barb has recently acquired a new horse, for years while horseless, she would offer clinics at her farm so that others may learn the beautiful art of dressage.  Barbara Ellis is a selfless, kindhearted, and conscientious person and VADAF is honored she is one of our members.  Nominated by Barbara Snapp

Barbara Ellis (Fredericksburg):   Barb Ellis is what good sportsmanship is all about.  Anyone who has any contact with her immediately recognizes her sincere interest in their progress and achievements.  She gives 150 percent to VADA, especially VADAF, through her gracious volunteer efforts and willingness to step into a leadership position for the best interest of the organization.

Barb has been dedicated to horses for most of her life.  College, marriage, and rearing children only strengthened her love of the sport; each included various experiences with her horses.  Barb successfully competed on hunters prior to undertaking dressage.  Whether she is competing in the ring or standing by the side, she has always shown support and more importantly, respect of everyone she associates with.

I am fortunate to board my horse at her facility.  Barb provides superior, meticulous care for all horses at her barn, as if they were her own.  She has the highest standards which are applied to the care of the horses and the well-being of the boarders.

We are indeed fortunate to have the understated power, kindness, and dedication of Barb Ellis as a member of VADA.  She is committed to developing a respectable organization to support the excellence of dressage.  Nominated by Mary Stanley

Dilly Jackson (NOVA):  Dilly is currently president of VADA/NOVA, and has served as Treasurer and Board member for the past several years.  She is VADA/NOVA’s representative to VADA.  She demonstrates commitment to dressage and good sportsmanship in many ways, including: competing currently at 3rd and 4th levels, and always rewarding her horse for his efforts; coaching and supporting Pony Club; volunteering at various Shows as manager, secretary, scribe, scorer and including the Jr/YR Team competition sponsored by VADA/NOVA.  She is an “L” judge candidate, and a trainer of adults and children.  She is generous with praise and support for others who volunteer and compete.  Nominated by Susan Trivers

Beth Jandl (Charlottesville):    I would like to nominate Beth Jandl for the Shel Gafford Award for good sportsmanship.  Beth has been a long time member of the VADA.  She has operated in many volunteer capacities and in so doing has shown her ability to remain cheerful and supportive to the membership and to the organization.

Beth is the epitome of good sportsmanship.  She endears herself to all because of her non-selfish nature.  She has spent and spends countless hours volunteering as President of the VADA-Ch Chapter, State Board Rep., Sponsorship Chairperson for the annual VADA Championship shows as well as our recognized chapter show.  Beth is always cheerful, willing and helpful to others.  I do not think negative thoughts exist in the mind of Beth.  As a competitor you will always find a smile on the face of Beth no matter what the circumstances.

Beth Jandl is a kind and sensitive person willing to help all in the pursuit of our sport.  Nominated by Nancy Lowey

Sandy Johnson (Southeast):   Sandy Johnson worked very hard this year to achieve her personal goal…the Dover Medal.  While Sandy was pursuing her own goals, she took time to help others pursue theirs.  She found horses for juniors to compete on, even to the extent of loaning her own Oldenburg gelding to a junior.

Sandy has spent many nights in owners’ barns helping when their horses were sick, and offering emotional support when the worst happened.  On other occasions, she has dropped what she was doing to help a friend take a sick horse to Raleigh or Leesburg.  I personally know of five occasions when Sandy has missed work to do this.  Even during Hurricane Isabel, she spent the worst of the storm in a friend’s barn making sure the horses weathered the storm alright.

I am an Eventer, and Dressage entry forms are Greek to me.  When I started competing this year at recognized Dressage shows, it was Sandy who helped me get the entries right with all the right numbers, forms (VA & NC), and signatures.  She even helped me pick shows where she thought my young horse and I could show well.

Sandy does so much for others, helping and encouraging both friends and competitors, and that is what the Shel Gafford Award is all about.  I hope you will consider Sandy for this award.  Nominated by Sarah Miller

Sandy Johnson (Southeast):   Sandy Johnson is a tireless and committed supporter of dressage not only on a local, but state and regional level.  She actively shows her horse Meca in Region 1 competitions to include Musical Freestyle.  She is the Awards Chair and VADA Representative for the Southeast Chapter of the Virginia Dressage Association.  No matter what the task, the dressage club and horse community at large can count on Sandy.  Whether it be setting up a ring 3 hours before a schooling show or hopping off her horse to help another member tack up their horse, settle another rider’s nerves, run score sheets to the judges, trailer someone to a schooling show, provide care instructions for a sick or injured horse and the list goes on.

Sandy always goes above and beyond the call of duty for club members. Sandy is never too busy to help with holding horses for the farrier, caring for sick or injured horses, offering friendly encouragement to struggling riders at shows, assisting members with horse “issues”, and much more.  There is no end to Sandy’s dedication to horses and friends.

SVDA and VADA are fortunate to have Sandy Johnson in their ranks of committed dressage riders.  She is an example for younger club members to follow not only in her abilities as a rider, but a committed volunteer to the local and regional dressage community.  Nominated by Wendy Murray

Sarah Kern (Charlottesville): I would like to nominate Sarah Kern.  She is modest and grateful for her victories and accepts failures with grace and a smile.  She always looks for the fault in her riding and preparation, never blaming her horse or judge.  She has helped with three VADA shows this year.  She has loaned her horse to another talented junior to let her have an otherwise unavailable opportunity to ride at a recognized show.

This last year has been full of sorrow and disappointment for her.  She lost her partner of two years to colic in November.  During the winter she began from the beginning once again with a four-year-old.  He was rewarded with Reserve Champion Training Level at Dressage at Lexington.  Four days later, she discovered he had a torn tendon as she was preparing to leave for Junior Team Championships.  She visits and exercises Lars at his lay-up facility.  She now rides a horse donated to the barn at which she trains.  Her hope is to help turn this little broodmare into a show horse.  She feels it is a way of giving back to those who taught her so much and hopefully help create a horse with potential for other children.   Nominated by Catherine Kern
