PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

SWVADA's competition year is in full swing! I hope you are taking advantage of all the schooling opportunities that SWVADA is offering. Annette Massey Shaw ran the April Ride-a-Test and it was very informative. Louise St. Amour came from Michigan to judge and teach.
Many of you remember Louise from her days at SWVADA. She is a past SWVADA president and we really appreciate her taking the time to come down and help us.

We had our first schooling show on Sat. April 22. We had a great turnout in spite of the threat of rain. I would like to thank Harriet Keys for a terrific job managing this show. We had thunder storms and rain the night before and mornings of both of these events but most of our competitors showed up and the events went off without a hitch. Dressage is not for the faint of heart! Our next event
is our recognized show on May 27. The closing date is May 5 and the
entries go to Bob Whitehurst (whitehst@aol.com).

I would also like to remind everyone of the threat of colic and founder. Since the rain has arrived the grass is really growing. Be sure to acclimate your horses to the new grass gradually. Take care and keep riding. We are lucky to live in one of the most beautiful areas of the country. Enjoy it!

~Susan Dallas

NEWS & NOTES

  • A BIG THANK YOU to all the volunteers at the April 8th Ride a Test, we all had a lot of fun. ~Annette
  • We need volunteers for the May 27th Recognized Show and the June Ride-A-Test.
  • SWVADA Spring Schooling Show
On Saturday, April 22, 2006, the first schooling show of the year was held at Green Hill Park Equestrian Center in Salem. The show was fully scheduled, with 65 riders making for a very full day. Early thundershowers started the day, and caused both management and competitors some nervous moments, but by 8 am, the rain had slowed. No thunder and lightening appeared, and the sun even peeked through once or twice.
Judge Beckie Mitchell saw some lovely rides. SWVADA was well represented by our Junior and Young Riders, with six showing their horses. One Junior Rider, Marie Yuhas, won the competitors' drawing, and received a lovely cooler donated by Susan and Bobby Dallas.
This show had some changes from last year. On the plus side, Green Hill's twelve new stalls were available, and greatly appreciated. Green Hill Park just gets better and better. As a minus, health regulations at the park will cause us to limit the availability of lunch. Remember to pack your picnic, or plan to drive a short distance to have lunch during the upcoming shows. Drinks and wrapped snack food will be for sale.
Show manager Harriet Keys, and secretary Susan Dallas, want to thank the volunteers who were the backbone of the show. By the way, all of these wonderful people actually did volunteer! Ellen Oliver and Cat Oliver, with their JR terrier Dixie, took care of scoring and running all day. Rebecca Cohen, Ellen Aiken, Mary Kafura, Annette Massey-Shaw, Anita Cox, Blanche Mahoney, David Keys and Gary Goodale all helped. Special thanks goes to Brigitte Peterson and Jim Stinson and their students and parents who waited patiently until the end of the show in order to help take down and clean up.
Thanks also goes to the competitors and their horses, who braved the iffy weather, and who understand that dressage shows do go on!
