PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Busy, busy, busy..... It seems that spring is finally well and truly here!
The horses are shedding, the grass is growing, and show season has started.
Already this spring, SWVADA has sponsored a Freestyle Symposium, a
Ride-A-Test and a Schooling Show. Some of you have already ventured bravely
out into the show world - others are waiting for that "just right" moment to
make your debut. Regardless, everyone should be concerned with the correct
riding and training of the horse - after all, that is what the judge is
looking for when evaluating your ride. Remember, there are several ways to
improve your understanding of the training of the horse - lessons, clinics,
and books/magazines just to name a few. Along those lines, SWVADA will be
sponsoring another Ride-A-Test in June. Here's an excellent opportunity to
practice that test and get a little coaching in a less stressful setting
than a show. If you're already "up and ready", remember that the SWVADA
Recognized Show will be held May 29 at Green Hill Park Of course, none of
these events could happen without an energetic and loyal group of
volunteers. Whether you're competing for a year end award or not, we'd love
to have you come and join the volunteer fun at the next SWVADA event.
Please contact the event manager for more information!
Enjoy the weather - I hope to see you "out and about!"

3. VADA grants have been requested and should be forthcoming soon.
4. Asked for input on location of monthly meetings.
Secretary’s Report: Gary Goodale
1. VOTED to dispense with reading of the minutes.
2. VOTED to approve minutes as submitted.
Treasurer’s Report: Blanche Mahoney
1. Explained the apparent low balance in our account. All yearly dues to VADA/USDF have been paid. Show funds, grant funds, etc. will be coming in. Also, dues continue to come in.
2. Balance: $347.82
3. Savings: $1053.01
Education/Clinics/Camp: Laura Nelson
1. Camp: JULY 1 IS THE CLOSING DATE FOR CAMP. Laura is now taking deposits. Fees are refundable IF the vacancy can be filled. Requested that information re: camp be sent to VADA. (Beckie will attend to.)
2. Freestyle Symposium: Lots of fun and most informative. Would like to have had more auditors present. Laura gave an overview of the format/topics. All involved considered it a great experience. The grant did not cover all expenses. Discussed what to do when losses occur. Decided that budgets for functions need to be planned in advance in so far as possible.
3. Clinics: “Moving Up a Level” with Judy Westenhoefer will require a date change. Laura will contact Judy.
Educational Sunday: Ellen Aiken/ Jeanette Shires
1. The date for next year will be Sunday, 27 February 2005 in the new facility at VA Tech. Discussed options/proposals for next year. Need to make decision on offering concessions to the Tech Block and Bridle Club.
2. Ellen provided a review of expenses. Explained that at the last minute it was necessary to rent a sound system. Also explained that donations from Tack Shops provide an opportunity for these shops to generate publicity.
3. Evaluations: Revealed that talks were rated very high. Most had learned of the program via the internet. Most requested future topic was Competitive Trail Riding.
4. Suggested that Board Members be available during the day to communicate with the public.
5. Jeanette suggested the Board consider whether to shorten the day OR offer a full day. Should we offer multi sessions? Will definitely need more help. Need to decide on fees.

2. The Fun Horse Show raised $1877; show funds are used for operating expenses.
3. A fund has been started to raise money for stabling.
4. Ellen Aiken will remain on GH Board but did explain that she would be unable to be as active due to other commitments.
Hospitality: Blanche Mahoney
1. Patrons of Glenvar H.S. have offered to provide concessions at shows. Some concerns re: insurance issues were discussed. The Board would like to accept the offer.
2. VOTED to ask that the Glenvar organizer become a member of SWVADA at fee of $23 (excludes membership in VADA/USDF) in order to be covered by SWVADA insurance.Long Range Planning Committee: Gary Goodale
1. The committee will meet briefly following the regular meeting.
2. Will set date for a future meeting and prioritize topics to be addressed.
Membership: Pat Nelson
1. Currently have 111 members.
2. Members are reminded to renew memberships!
Awards/Points: Ellen Aiken
1. Suggested that an updated Volunteer Form be made available; it would probably be more efficient if Show Managers filled out these forms as they currently report volunteer hours anyway. One form per volunteer for each function.
2. Forms will be in Secretary’s Box. Ellen will check re: putting online. Ellen and Blanche will meet and update list.
Recognized Show: Pat Nelson/Jeanette Shires
1. EMT must be on grounds; the cost is $12 an hour. Beckie will check availability of a member who is an EMT .
2. Advertising: Have sold $210; NEED SPONSORS!
3. NEED VOLUNTEERS FOR SHOW. An email message will be sent to membership. Beckie Mitchell now sends out the mass mailings.
Ride a Test: Beckie Mitchell
1. There are 18 rides scheduled. Entry fees will not cover expenses. This is considered an educational endeavor; however, SWVADA can not afford losses. Expenses continue to go up. A discussion focused on problems of providing educational functions without incurring losses. A review of fees needed.
2. Discussion led to the recommendation that a BUDGET COMMITTEE be formed and be a part of the Long Range Planning Committee. The SWVADA Events Book being kept by Gary Goodale should provide useful information for future financial planning.
VADA: Susan Dallas/Harriet Keys/Annette Massey Shaw
1. Harriet Keys reported that we now should be getting a copy of each chapter newsletter.
2. VADA awarded the Regional Championships for 2005.
3. BLM needs sponsors. VOTED to provide the requested $45 from chapters to fund the breakfast barn coffee and snacks on show days.
4. The recently revised BY LAWS have been passed.
5. Holly Veloso is providing a helpful (and amusing!) information/volunteer update which is emailed to all VADA members.
6. Discussed options for distribution of the VADA Purple Book. It is not required that chapters mail the book.
7. BLM sponsorships for Open Classes are needed: Cost is $35 per class.
Video Library: Gabi Hooten
1. Would like requests for new video titles.
2. Contact Gabi for video use.
Schooling Show: Harriet Keys
1. Ring set up on Friday. Concessions will be from Subway.
2. Announced that Duiguids Lane will be closed due to railroad work. Riders will be informed and given alternate route when they receive their show times.
Upcoming Events: April 24 Schooling Show w/ Tina Longacre. Organizer: Harriet Keys (Tina will stay with HK so no need for motel. Thanks, HK!)
The meeting then adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Gary Maupin Goodale, Secretary

Volunteers needed for the Recognized Show on May 29th. Contact Jeanette Shires
FREESTYLE SYMPOSIUM with Tigger MontagueA big thanks to Laura Nelson for organizing and managing the Freestyle Symposium with Tigger Montague. I'm sure lots of time and effort (and phone calls!) went into recruiting and coordinating the demonstration riders for each day. Saturday was lots of fun - the quadrille team provided many laughs as well as some educational moments and the pas de deux teams really inspired all of us to just "get out there and do it." While I wasn't able to attend on Sunday, I have benefitted from that session - everyone had so much fun riding to music and learning about matching the gaits to the beats that we're now riding with music at home. It sure makes the training sessions go by quickly! So thanks to all those brave and daring demo riders.A special "thank you" to Mark and Judy Gustafson for allowing us the use of their fabulous facility. We couldn't have been in a more ideal setting!I hope to see YOU out with your new freestyle soon! Beckie APRIL RIDE-A-TEST with Helen GeorgeMany, many thanks to Pam Bennington, Harriet Keys, Ellen Aiken, Blanche Mahoney, Annette Massey-Shaw, Rebecca Splan, Elizabeth Maguire, and Gail Stanley for their help with the ride-a-test. From ring set up, to scribing tests, to ring take down and show cleanup, these ladies were cheerfully "doing what it takes" to put on a SWVADA event. We are truly fortunate to have such dedicated volunteers - I don't know what we would do without them. Take a bow, ladies!BeckieIn Dressage at Latta in NC, Sara Kominsky and her 1999 PRE stallion, Heroico Pequeno, placed 2nd in First Level Test 1 and won their two FEI TOC classes (riding the FEI test for 5 year olds) with scores of 72% and 74%. Heroico, who was competing in his very first dressage show, was also the highest scoring horse for both days for all levels above Training. At the VADA/Nova Spring Competition, April 10-11th at Morven Park, Heroico Pequeno placed 1st and 2nd in his FEI Young Horse Test for 5 year olds and pre-qualified to attend the Eastern Division of the USEF Young Horse Selection Trial Finals held in Allentown NJ in late May. Heroico also placed 2nd and 5th in his First Level classes.
Congratulations to Lynn Jendrowski and her young horse Mythe Von Mytilene, (Merlin), on a very successful first show. They won two classes at the VADA/NOVA Spring Dressage Show with a 68.750% and 71.923% which was the high score of the day on Saturday. Shapiro placed 3rd in the Intermediare I with a 64.25%. Shapiro and Lynn are going to their 1st CDI at Port Jervis, NY later this month. Congratulations Shaina Oberlender on earning her HA Pony Club Level. Congratulations to Abbey Chase and Bravo Cognn on their High Score Award at the Spring Arabian Classic with a score of 68.8%.

__________________________________________________________________________Thoroughbred Awards: Recognition for America's Original Sporthorse
Speed, stamina and courage: for more than two centuries, these are the qualities that have been the hallmark of the Thoroughbred. He has proven his mettle in every generation, not merely at the track, but on the battlefield and the hunt field, in the show ring and the dressage arena, in short, everywhere an equine athlete is needed.
The North American Thoroughbred Society, just one year old, was founded to promote these wonderful horses in their endeavors outside of the world of racing. We will offer awards and incentives in all disciplines: hunters,
jumpers, dressage and eventing. This year, in addition to United States Dressage Federation year end breed awards, we are able to offer recognition to Thoroughbreds competing in Sporthorse In Hand classes at the following events:
-- GHF Annual Dressage and June DSH Breeding Show, June 12th and 13th, 2004, held at Georgia International Horse Park, Conyers, GA. For information, contact www.goodhorseman.org.
-- Fair Hill Dressage Sport Horse Breed Show, August 28th, 2004, held at Fair Hill Natural Resource Management Area, Elkton, MD. For information, contact lorik.2@netzero.com.
-- Dressage at Devon, September 28th through October 3rd, 2004, held in Devon PA. For information, contact lorik.2@netzero.com or www.dressageatdevon.org.
At these competitions, we will be offering special awards (In Hand High Score and Reserve) to Jockey Club registered Thoroughbreds in both the Open and Individual Breed Classes. At Dressage at Devon, we will offer additional placings of 3rd through 10th in the Individual Breed Class.
