President's Message

Wow! What a different winter we're having than what we have been used to over the past few years!
What have you been doing with your free time now that the weather is preventing you from being on the back of a horse?
It's given me time to be a little introspective, to think about my goals for the coming show season and even beyond.
I came across this poem on my Parkinson's forum and I would like to share it with you.

poem removed.

I would like everyone to come and enjoy and learn at our Educational Sunday in Blacksburg this
Sunday from 11:00 to 4:00. You can find more information on our website!

Would you like to be really prepared for your first show with the new dressage tests? Plan to attend our clinic on
March 23 with Judy Westenhoefer. She will be discussing and showing us with demo riders the new tests from
Training Level thru Second Level. More information will be in this newsletter and on the website.

Now, you'll be ready to ride in a Ride-a-Test on April 12 with "L" Judge April Rivers at Green Hill Park! Please
contact Harriet Keys at 989-4198 to sign up.

I know all of this will help you to get to your goals and help you make your dash exactly what you want it to be!

See you at the shows!
Pam Bennington

VADA Fix-a-test Clinics

In an effort to help our members better understand and execute the new tests, VADA is sponsoring FREE Fix-A-Test Clinics in each Chapter. Eight Judges from among our membership have generously volunteered their time to preside over these clinics at no cost to VADA members. Our volunteer Judges will receive VADA volunteer credit for their time and VADA will reimburse them for their travel expenses. Each chapter will decide for themselves who will ride in these clinics, but they are open to all VADA members to audit for free.

New Dress Code for 2003

The SWVADA Board of Directors has voted to introduce a modified dress code for their 2003 show season.  While SWVADA still endorses and encourages the traditional show attire outlined by USAEq, it now will allow coats to be optional at all SWVADA sponsored schooling shows.  Riders competing without coats should wear a light colored short or long sleeved shirt with a collar.  Also, a conservative sweater or vest may be worn in cooler weather.
This change was implemented primarily to give new and/or younger dressage competitors a bit more flexibility in their attire.  A neat, clean, and polished appearance is still expected and as always, will reflect positively on the rider, the horse, and the sport of dressage.  The new dress code, including USAEq rules, will appear in the 2003 Omnibus.

The SWVADA Omnibus should be mailed on Monday. If you don't receive your omnibus, you have not yet joined!

Share your Love of Horses with a Foreign Exchange Student
EF Foundation for foreign study is a worldwide, non-profit organization dedicated to international student exchange and education which aims to encourage cultural awareness and mutual respect between nations.

Student are between the ages of 16 and 18 years of age.  28 different countries are represented. Host families provide room and board and a loving nurturing environment. Many students are talented in various areas such as art, gymnastics, music, sports, and I also have several equestrian students to choose from. The majority of the equestrians are skilled in either dressage, vaulting, and jumping. They would like to share their love of horses with an American family.

Many of our host families have later traveled to the students home and have enjoyed riding their horses.  There are more than 50 students in VA, this year.

EF Foundation Coordinators provide 24 hour support, maintain regular contact with students, schools, and host families. Coordinators generally live in close proximity, conduct orientations, and organize activities throughout the year.

Students arrive in late July and stay until the close of school in June. Students pay for their own expenses: school lunches, clothing, spending money, toiletries etc.  All students carry  medical coverage.

If you are interested in opening your door to a student from around the world, you have the opportunity to learn about a new culture and build friendships that last a lifetime! If you would like more information, please call Anne Nettles 804-693-2967 or email me at
graphixs1@earthlink.net I look forward to hearing from you!
