PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

This past week has been challenging for many of us. As the heavy rain was falling, causing barns and arenas to flood, SWVADA was preparing for its second schooling show of the season. Blanche and Beckie have been keeping an eye on things at Green Hill. Though there has been some damage, it has been decided that the show will be held. This show is July 1st, so we will be working on it as this goes out to you. I hope you are able to attend. There will be more about this show in the next newsletter. Our ride a test that was held on June 10th was a huge success. I would like to thank Pat Nelson for all her hard work organizing and running this event.

Our website and newsletter will be undergoing some changes in the months to come. Sean Pecor will be taking over as our webmaster from Frances Yeardley. Frances has done a wonderful job with our website. The time and energy that she devoted to this task was enormous and we thank her for it. I hope you will all be patient as we go through this transition period.

We are now over halfway through the SWVADA year. We still have many activities planned for the rest of the year but we need volunteers to keep everything going. If you haven't had a chance to volunteer, please do so. The organization needs you. We also need your input and ideas for what you want from SWVADA. The board tries very hard to offer activities that all our members can enjoy but we can't do that if we don't hear from you. Please take the time to let us know if you like the direction that SWVADA is taking and also to thank some of the people that are working so hard to bring these events to you. Have fun riding because that is why we do this!

~Susan Dallas

NEWS & NOTES

  • Congrats to Laura Nelson on her latest aquisition "Wykked Casenova" a 4 year old Welsh Cob.

  • Congratulations to Sue Cooper on the purchase of Isolde (Sadie), a Holsteiner mare bred by Susan and Bobby Dallas (Dahlia/Candidus) and previously owned by Pam Scordas, former SWVADA President and Life Member.

  • Ride-A-Test Report: I would like to thank Harriet Peterson and Frances Yeardley for their time and expertise at SWVADA's highly successful June 10 Ride-A-Test. We had so many entries that a second clinician was needed. I received several comments from ridesr saying they learned a lot. That made me feel god -- after all, that's why we hold these Ride-A-Tests. We had riders from as far away as Lynchuburg, va and Summersville, WV. The weather couldn't have been lovelier. A good time was had by all.

My sincere thanks goes to Blanche Mahoney, Christine Young, Jean Bost-Moore, Annie Ireland, Ginger Edwards, Marie Yukas, Susan Dallas, Harriet & Daivd Keys, Bob Whitehurst and Beckie Mitchell for ring setups: Judy Bonin, Mary Kafura and Meredith McGrath for scribing; Tom Nelson for scoring; and Meredith McGrath, Judy Bonin, Tom Nelson and Gail Stanley for ring takedown and put away.

    Pat Nelson, Ride-A-Test Manager/Secretary

  • The following is from Bettina Longaker, NAJYRC Dressage Event Director (vadvirag@earthlink.net, www.BGLongaker.com): As you may be aware of by now, Virginia is again hosting an International Dressage Championships at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, VA on August 2 - 6 -> The North American Junior Young Rider Championships. This year's Championship will be a first for Dressage, as the Junior Riders will also participate in their own Competition! The Organizing Committee is very excited about this, as you can only offer something for the first time once and our NAJYRC gets to be the one. We are also having "open scoring" for the first time in Virginia - e-scribes - so the audience will see the marks as the ride progresses on a large screen - just like in the Olympics! I have to admit, last year, I did not have a clue as to what was required to put on this Championship (which is considered to be one step down from the Olympic and World Equestrian Games!), but I have a better idea now. And for this, I need your help. One big thing is the number and quality of volunteers - we need a lot of the best our area has to offer. Five days of competition requires a tremendous amount of people. With the inclusion of the Juniors and the e-scribes, this number has grown tremendously. We will need 10 scribes per DAY - just for one ring and they must all be experienced, as the international judges (only one is from the US) are used to having either other judges or very experienced scribes. I know we have such a group of scribes around. What an opportunity for our judges and/or L Graduates to get to scribe at an International Championships. All e-scribes will get an introduction to e-scribing one hour before the day's competition starts. We also need many "busy bees" - line dragging (with a roller) and gate keeping are very important jobs and at this level, the FEI Steward and Foreign TD would like to have the same person do these jobs for the entire Championships. Now, I know this is not likely, but I would like to find the best people for these jobs, who can commit to a full day. And the perk is getting to watch all those rides - with the scores on the big screen. We also need some experienced horseman who can be ring stewards. At this level of competition, the riders are not even allowed to school with out show staff supervision. With the addition of the Juniors, we will have riders schooling in different localities during the day. Both the Foreign TD and FEI Steward will work with every steward before they start their stewarding. We are still in need of score checkers - as the e-scribes will be inputting the scores directly to the computer system, there will be no data entry - but lots of checking - remember there are five judges. There is always a need for people to patrol the grounds for rocks and other trash in the rings - before the competition starts, during breaks, and at the end of the day. People to check the judges packets in the early AM, wipe off the tables and get the arena ready for the day's competition. We can also use runners, who will really be walkers. Lunch is provided for day workers and housing (with roommate) will be available for those who are traveling a long distance and/or volunteering for more than one day. Dress needs to be neat and tidy, the International Dressage scene tends to be a tad conservative. VADA members will get volunteer hours for their participation at this unique event. We have a great main core of volunteers - Dianne Boyd, Beth Jandl, Alison Head, Dilly Jackson, Nancy Lowey, Carter Bass, Cindy Aspend, Peta Jean Wyllie, Victoria O'Hara, Tigger Montague, Catherine & Sara Kern, Charlie Denton (FL), Sandra Trussell (FL), Sandi Piazza (SC) to name a few. I sincerely hope that each and everyone one of you can make the time to volunteer and help make this the best Dressage competition the the NAYRC has ever had. Thank you very much for your time and consideration in this very important matter.
