PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
With the completion of the schooling show this weekend (July 2 at GHPEC), the SWVADA competition year will be more than half over. Two schooling shows, two "Ride A Tests," and the recognized show have already been outstanding successes. A major reason these events have been so terrific is the volunteer support SWVADA has received so far this year. At the last "Ride A Test", for which I was the manager, I was blessed with an abundance of cheerful, capable volunteers. Nine volunteers, yes, nine!, showed up at GHPEC on a steamy Friday afternoon to set up rings. With so many "hands," set up was actually fun and both rings were up within an hour and a half....not bad! The next day, there were volunteers scoring (several took the opportunity to learn to score - yeah!), scribing, acting as ring stewards to keep the "Ride A Test" flowing smoothly, and generally being ambassadors of good will for SWVADA. It was just fantastic! The potluck lunch and tack sale that Gary Goodale organized just made the day that much more fun. While volunteering sounds like something of a drag, I think I can say that these folks actually had a good time - and could see that they made a valuable contribution to the day. There are two more schooling shows (August 27 and October 29) for which volunteers are needed. Neither show has a manager at the moment -- if you're willing, there are many of us who would step in and guide you through the process of managing a schooling show. If managing is too much, volunteers are needed in every capacity. Please contact me if you're willing to volunteer at either of these events. I can promise you appreciation from SWVADA and, just maybe, some fun along the way!~Beckie

Next Meeting: 7 PM, Monday, July 18, 2005
The Wildflour Restaurant at Hollins
The regular monthly meeting of SWVADA was held on Monday, 20 June 2005 at the Wildflour Restaurant in Hollins, VA. President Beckie Mitchell called the meeting to order. Board Members Present: Sue Cooper, Susan Dallas, Gary Goodale, Robin Jones, Blanche Mahoney, Beckie Mitchell, Laura Nelson, Pat Nelson, Rebecca Splan. Board Members Absent: Pam Bennington, Gabi Hooten, Susan MacIssac, Kim Reid, Annette Massey Shaw, Jeanette Shires. Members/Guests also Present: Chelsea Brannon.
President’s Report: Beckie Mitchell
1. It is with sincere regret that we bid farewell to two current board members due to relocation: Pam Bennington is moving to Arizona and Susan MacIssac to California. Their contributions to SWVADA have been very generous. We wish them well; they will be GREATLY missed.
2. Asked that consideration be given now re: serving on the Board, Officers for 2006, committee chairs, and yearly events.
Secretary’s Report: Gary Goodale
Voted to accept report as submitted.
Treasurer’s Report: Blanche Mahoney
1. Balance in Checking Account: $6,458.26.
2. Noted that donation for the Legislative Trail Ride has been paid for 2006.
3. VOTED to sponsor a 'Daily Level Sponsorship”'for the GAIG’s show in October. Cost: $200.
Membership: Pat Nelson
1. Currently have 132 members.
Ride a Test: Beckie Mitchell
1. Very popular and successful with a full day. Commended the great volunteer effort.
2. Thanks to Harriet Peterson for serving as judge/clinician.
3. Suggestion that we hold more Ride a Tests since they are proving to be so popular.
4. Discussed buying a portable microphone so auditors can hear instructions of clinicians.Pot Luck/ Tack Sale: Gary Goodale
1. The Pot Luck proved very successful. SWVADA provided fried chicken and drinks. Lots of great food and wonderful desserts.
2. Will consider holding more in future, especially with Ride a Tests.
3. Decided that tack sale might better be held in conjunction with a more highly attended function, or as a separate function. Also, perhaps the tack sale held in conjunction with Educational Sunday is sufficient.
July Schooling Show: Blanche Mahoney/Pat Nelson
1. The ring set up will be the day before the show.
2. Call Blanche if you can volunteer for the show!
Miscellaneous
1. Discussed various ideas for awards at schooling shows to involve more people. Suggestions included having a groom’s award, drawings for competitors and volunteers, Young Rider award. Noted that $50 is the limit for awards at schooling shows.
2. D and O Insurance: Blanche has investigated. No info yet from VADA (meet in July). Questions include: covered under umbrella of VADA? USDF? The expense for such insurance is considerable. Questioned the necessity of buying. Await further information before making a decision.
3. The August Schooling Show still needs a Manager!
4. Decided to roll over to next year the VADA Grant funds. Beckie will notify VADA.
5. NAYRC Show needs assistance for July 27-31. To be held at the Virginia Horse Center. Contact Tina Longaker or Holly Veloso to volunteer. Will try to encourage our Young Riders to volunteer as this would be a valuable experience.
The meeting then adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Gary Maupin Goodale, Secretary

Pam and Steve Bennington will be relocating to Phoenix, Arizona. Pam is a past president of SWVADA, as well as a longtime Board Member, show manager, and dear friend. She will be greatly missed. Good luck to them in their future endeavors.
Congratulations to several SWVADA members who exhibited at the recent Shenandoah Valley Classic. Pavan, owned by Rebecca Splan, was named Champion Sport Horse Under Saddle in both Open and Amateur divisions. Bravo Cognn, owned by Abbey Chase, earned the Champion Sport Horse Under Saddle Junior to Ride. Finishing out the sweep of the Sport Horse Division was Careless Kisses, ownned by Katie Myers, who won the Sport Horse Under Saddle Junior Horse Championship.
Congratulations to Louise St.Amour, SWVADA Life Member in Michigan, who is one of 9 L Graduates to be accepted in the USEF “r” program.
Susan and Bobby Dallas are happy to welcome Effie to the world. Effie is a Hanoverian filly by Domiro out of their Hanoverian mare Prom Night. Prom Night was bred by Harriet and David Keys.A "gi-normous" thank you to all the volunteers who helped make the June "Ride A Test" such a success! First, a big thanks to our clinician, Harriet Peterson, who volunteered a half a day of her time. Her humor and gentle manner complimented her expertise with the horse/rider combinations that "just kept coming" through a long day. A second big, big thanks goes to all the volunteers who gave so generously of their time. Ring set up (what a stellar crew - 2 rings in a little over an hour!!!!) - Harriet K., Pam B., Blanche, Shaina O., Debra Harrison, Monica Weinzapel, Jean Bost-Moore, Lynn Jendrowski. Then "day of" volunteers: Marylee Nichols Jean Bost-Moore, Wendy and Muriel Jacobson, Jennifer Grover, Anita Cox, Susan McIsaac, and Monica Weinzapel. They were all wonderful! SWVADA is truly thankful for the support the volunteers have shown this year!
