President's Message
Year End Celebration Was Great Fun!
Despite the threat of bad weather, more than 50 SWVADA members and guests gathered Saturday, January 24, at the Airport Holiday Inn to celebrate 2003 with family and friends. During the cocktail hour, attendees mingled with friends and checked out the many beautiful and interesting items brought as donations for the silent auction. The SWVADA Board had voted that the proceeds from this year's auction would benefit Green Hill Equestrian Park and The Virginia Horse Center. Later in the evening, with a little enthusiastic "egging on" from Tamla Nichols, emcee, the bidding began in earnest. Along with much good natured bantering and teasing, some serious generosity was evident. All told, the auction generated over $1000 to be divided between the two worthy causes!
After dinner, a brief program included summary remarks from 2003 president, Pam Bennington, highlighting the many achievements of SWVADA this year. Gary Goodale, acting as SWVADA historian, reminded us that SWVADA had just completed its 25th year and shared some interesting recollections about early show experiences. While addressing the year to come, in addition to all the shows, clinics, educational opportunities, and social gatherings planned, I was pleased to announce the formation of a new trophy division for year end awards. The SWVADA Board has created The Virginia Horse Center Benefit Trophy (donated by Gary Goodale in memory of Executive Mark.) First level test one at each of our schooling shows will be designated "The Virginia Horse Center Benefit Class" with proceeds from the entry fees being donated to The Virginia Horse Center for the debt retirement fund. Be sure to check out the Omnibus for more information regarding eligibility for this trophy.
In celebration of the competition achievements of our members, year end awards were presented during the evening. (For complete results, check out the Year End Awards link on the web site.) Lots of pictures were taken - they are included in this newsletter. Many congratulations to all the winners of the evening! A special "congratulations" is in order for Susan Dallas, the winner of the Barcelli award. Susan's dedication to dressage and generosity with her time in support of SWVADA makes her one of those very special members. It was wonderful to see her recognized with this award!
And, finally, the evening couldn't have happened without the hard work of our hospitality chairwoman, Blanche Mahoney. From the balloons on the tables, to Rod Stewart crooning "oldies" in the background, to silent auction forms and pencils, to taking pictures of winners, no job was too small or detail overlooked.... yeah, Blanche!
Thanks again to all those who came out and made the evening so full of fun and laughter. The next SWVADA event is Educational Sunday on Feb. 29 at Virginia Tech. Come join us! I hope to see you there....

- Use NON-clumping kitty litter on your walkways to prevent slipping.
- A strainer is a great tool for cleaning water buckets/tubs of stray hay, bedding, etc.

Eyewitness Wellington Report!
I had a great opportunity this past weekend to witness some great dressage riding at the Gold Coast Dressage Association show in Wellington, Florida. Some of the highlights are as follows.
On Saturday, January 24, our own Pati Pierucci scored a 63.488 in Fourth Level Test 2 riding Camaron, a bay Andalusian stallion. The judge was Barbara Marks.
Robert Dover received a 70.833 riding Rainier in the Grand Prix test on Saturday. Judges were Janet Brown, Lorraine Stubbs, and Gary Rockwell.
On Sunday, Robert rode Rainier in the Grand Prix Special and received a 71.400 from Sandra Hotz, Gary Rockwell, and Jeanne McDonald.
Other notable riders were Lynda Alicki and Tammi Crawford. Both did well. Others I noted that did well were Arlene Page, Emmy Adwers and Shannon Dueck.
I also watched three Grand Prix musical freestyles. I have to say that VADA should be very happy with their freestyles.
The weather was beautiful – in the 70’s and sunny. Hated to leave, especially with the weather we came back to.
Your on-site reporter – Pat Nelson.

- To Right A Horse - Mounting a horse is
actually very easy if it is done properly. A rider can only mount a
horse from one side because a horse only likes to be mounted from one
side. The left side is right and the right side is wrong. You're right
to be left and wrong to be right. If you mount from the front, you mount
from the right, which is then the left because your right is its left,
and the left the right, keeping in mind that the left is right and the
right is wrong. Put your left to your right and step so your right is to
the wrong and now your right is opposite its left and left the right. To
right right is to the left and to right is wrong is to the right, but
backwards, the right is right and the left is wrong only when your right
is on its wrong, and the left is on its right. Switching right to left
and left to right is wrong. Right is wrong and left is right only from
the front or else the left is right and the right is wrong. |
