President's Message

December is here and with it starts a new year for SWVADA. We have a lot of things planned for this year so I invite you to participate, volunteer and enjoy all that SWVADA has to offer. This will be our last newsletter. Sean Pecor has been updating our website and we will now be able to put everything that was in our newsletter directly onto the website. This way we can keep our members updated on news and events. Please look at the new look and feel - free to offer comments and suggestions. We need to know how you like the way the website is constructed. As the weather starts to get colder and the Christmas lights begin to go up, I realize how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful place and to be a part of the horse community. I share my successes, failures, happy times and sad ones with my "horse friends". I cannot imagine my life without a horse or the friends I have made because of them. We all share a bond that adds something wonderful to our lives. Happy Holidays to all of you!

Susan Dallas

2007 SWVADA Membership

Well, like another school year, Christmas, show season, etc., that time is almost upon us again – membership renewal. It’s hard to believe that summer is more than half over (thank goodness!) and the new school year will be starting soon.

The SWVADA/VADA/USDF 2007 year starts December 1, 2006. I know it’s hard to think about joining things for 2007 now (like buying winter clothes in August), but you can beat the rush, get it out of the way, don’t have to scrounge up the money during the holidays and while doing Christmas shopping. Everyone is very busy around Thanksgiving and Christmas. We all have good intentions of sending our dues in, but it gets laid by the wayside with all the other things to do. So, if you’ll fill out the membership form, write out your check, and send them to me, IT’S ALL DONE! Now doesn’t that make you feel good. One less thing to think about later on.

We at SWVADA hope to see all of you again. I’ll be waiting for your envelopes. Hope the remainder of your summer is great!

Board Members Absent: Sue Cooper, Beckie Mitchell, Ellen Aiken
Members Present: Robin Jones

President’s Report: Susan Dallas ~ No Official Report.

Vice President’s Report: Laura Nelson ~ Judges for schooling shows will be hired as soon as dates for shows are confirmed with the GHP schedule. Kay Meredith has been hired for the Licensed show in May 26, 2007. She is an “S” level judge

Secretary’s Report: Jeanette Shires ~ A motion was made by Laura Nelson to accept the August minutes as submitted by Gary Goodale. Seconded by Pat Nelson. Passed unanimously.

Treasurer’s Report: Blanche Mahoney ~ Checking Account $9638.93 Savings Account $1065.76 CD $3000.00

Adult Camp 2006: Laura Nelson ~ Dressage Foundation has issued the check for the last installment for the grant money awarded to camp for this year . Included was a nice letter thanking Laura for the information she provided to them about the camp and encouraging her to apply for money again next year. As of this time all financial and other details of camp for this year have been accounted for.

Clinics/Education: Annette Massey-Shaw/Gary Goodale ~ Members have asked for clinics. We will do some 1-day clinics this coming year, look to the website (www.swvada.org) for dates. We need members to FILL THE CLINICS. Send realistic clinician ideas to Annette, or any board member.

Educational Sunday: Ellen Aiken/Jeanette Shires ~ Speakers are set, tentative schedule next month.

Equipment: Bob Whitehurst ~ No official report.

Green Hill Park: Bob Whitehurst ~ VDOT is fixing the entrance to the ring. No longer will it entail the long winding drive for trailers. Exactly when it will be complete is unclear. Some of the money in the bank that was going to be used for new stalls is going to have to go to this road project…..

Hospitality: Blanche Mahoney ~ No official report.

Membership: Pat Nelson ~ A few memberships for 2007 are arriving.

Points/Awards: Ellen Aiken ~ Everything is updated. Still waiting for some recognized show scores since the deadline for them is November 30.

Awards: Gabi Hooten, Nancy Stone, Rebecca Splan, Jeanette Shires, Gary Goodale ~ No official report.

Omnibus: Dana Poleski ~ No official report.

Recognized Show: Nancy Stone ~ SWVADA did had to pay to have the dates of the Licensed shoe moved back to our original date in May. Nancy Stone proposed that we take a 2-page ad (prizelist) out in the Region 1 Omnibus at a cost of $125.00 ($75.00 1st page, $50.00 each additional page) to advertise the Licensed show. This was seconded by Bob Whitehurst. Passed unanimously. Bob and Nancy brought up show management software that they would like to purchase for the use of the people running the show. The software is a database management tool devised to conatin within it all the information that USEF and USDF require to be in all of their reports before during and after the show. It also will have the information in it to create the show program, create the ride schedule and do any financial reports the organization wants to complete. It is created in Microsoft Access. The cost is $299.00 one time purchase fee and then a $35.00 per year update/license fee. For that, we can buy the software and the rights to use it on 1 computer. Some concerns were made about the ability to use it on Pc’s and Macintosh’s since a number of people who have run the show in the past have Mac’s in their barn’s and not PC’s, and can we use it easily for he schooling shows… can it go on more than 1 computer. These questions will be answered and a decision will be made at the next meeting if not before through electronic means. Everyone is encouraged to go to the Fox Village web site (www.foxvillage.com) and try the software for themselves.

Public Relations: Pat Bevan ~ No official report.

VADA: Susan Dallas, Sarah Denham, Laura Nelson, Jeanette Shires ~ Fall show did not make as much money as usual. Cost of prizes was very high. Extra money from VADA does NOT have to be about the new tests since they are having their up the levels clinic.

Video Library: Gaby Hooten ~ No official report.

Young Rider: Sarah Denham, Nancy Stone ~ “T” is having Harriet Peterson in January for a Friday/Saturday/Sunday Clinic. A Ride-A-Test on Friday, a clinic format on Saturday and Sunday. A $10.00 Audit fee on Saturday would get SWVADA Junior/Young Rider/4H members the possibility to ride on Sunday with the VT Students. Contact Sarah Dehnam for more information. The SWVADA website will also have more information as it becomes available. Possibility of ‘practice’ dressage shows(ride tests in a real ring) in the future for Jr/YR. Keep eyes on the website.

Newsletter/Website: Sean Pecor reported by Nancy Stone ~ Seems to be going well.

Old Business: October Schooling Show – Pat and Bob ~ Thanks to Pat for a great schedule. Had about 88 rides for the show. The weather caused a few scratches. About $861.16 profit.

New Business: Volunteer of the year for VADA Banquet ~ Blanche Mahoney or Bob Whitehurst. Shel Gafford Award ~ Send your vote to Susan Dallas, information is on the VADA website. BARCELLI AWARD ~ 3 Nominations from the board – Annette Massey-Shaw, Pat Nelson, Bob Whitehurst

  • PLEASE VOTE!!!

Once again its time to cast your vote for the VADA SHEL GAFFORD MEMORIAL AWARD for EXCELLENCE in SPORTSMANSHIP. Please take a minute or two to read through the following nominations and vote for the one you feel best exemplifies the qualities of good sportsmanship and dedication to the advancement of the sport of Dressage. Each Chapter is to determine how they will collect the votes of their members. The Chapter representatives will then report their Chapter vote tallies to the Shel Award Coordinator. Vote tallies must be reported by December 15th, and the results will be announced at the VADA Awards Banquet in January 2007. The recipient of the Shel Award will be presented with a commemorative plaque and a check for $250.00.

    THE NOMINEES ARE:

Peggy Minnich, VADAF I would like to nominate Peggy Minnich for the Shel Gafford Memorial Sportsmanship Award for 2006. Peggy exemplifies dedication as a rider, trainer, coach, judge, club president and mentor. She is an achiever and her years of training her horse Fearless Legend from training level through I1 show her dedication and love of the sport. With Fearless retired, she has partnered with a four year old Dutch Warmblood mare, Vinca, and continues active involvement in the show ring. Her sportsmanship is evident as a competitor, trainer and coach. She willingly shares her years of experience as a rider in and out of the show ring with her students and fellow club members. Peggy has served as president of VADAF for three years. Through her encouragement and enthusiasm, membership and interest has grown. Under Peggy’s direction, the club has sponsored a recognized show the past three years and volunteer involvement has expanded. Her leadership and knowledge of our beloved sport is a wonderful example of willingness to give ones time and talents.
    Submitted by Barbara Ellis, VADAF

Abby Zezeski, SVDA I’d like to nominate Abby Zezeski for the Shel Gafford sportsmanship award. Abby is a 16 yr. old dressage rider with the SVDA. She enjoys showing with her horse, TOT, and win or lose, is able to always point out the positive in herself and in her horse. I’ve never seen her upset by her instructor’s criticism, nor the judges’. Prior to each riding lesson she takes, she pores over her previous score sheets to apply the judge’s feedback to her teacher’s instruction. Being a public high school teacher myself, this is a quality not seen often enough. Abby often attends schooling shows with friends she’s made through her interest in riding. She never hesitates to offer helpful pointers and assistance even though she’s aiding those whom she’ll be competing against! When Abby attended the Jr. National competition in Leesburg this summer, I watched her help her fellow riders with their tack, braiding, and grooming, even though she was ready to call it a long, hot day. Such unselfishness is hard to find among our teens of today. These are but a few of the excellent sportsmanship qualities I’ve seen Abby display in the past, and I’m sure, will continue to display in the future.
