Editor's Note

If you intend to send me a Word document, especially show prize lists, please follow the instructions here to make it html compatible. I am spending many hours recreating the Word documents that get sent that are not useable in their current Word format. Or if you have a Netscape browser, you can use Composer, that is built into the browser and do just like a Word doc. I will be forever grateful. Thanks! ~ Frances

President's Message

Hello,

I think our wish for warmer weather has come true!  I hope everyone is out riding and enjoying the weather.  Can you believe only one more month till school starts again?  This year is flying by.

This brings me to ask each and everyone one of you to think about running for the SWVADA board.  We meet once a month for a dinner meeting.  We would also like each board member to take on one more job!  This is your chance is get in on the decision making of SWVADA.  You'll meet other members (all great people) and provide very satisfying volunteer work.  Please think about it and call any one of the board members to give them your name.

Our July 5 show had a great turnout!  I would like to thank Blanche and Jeanette for all their hard work.  We were almost lucky enough to make it through this show without rain but it did catch up with us!  Thanks to all the volunteers who worked through heat and rain, great job!

Ellen Aiken is the manager for our next show at Green Hill Park on August 23.  She is still in need of volunteers.  Please give her a call to volunteer your time.  It's going to be a great show, Summer Blast, come and enjoy the fun.

Stay safe and enjoy the weather,
Pam Bennington

The Ten Step Procedure for Assessing Saddle Fit

This is the final of several articles on the Master Sadders Association Ten Step saddle-fit procedure. It covers Step #9 SADDLE MOVEMENT, and Step #10 HORSE RESPONSE.

STEP #9—SADDLE MOVEMENT

This step is most often overlooked in the saddle-fit process.  There are two parts to it:  static and dynamic.

For the static part, place your saddle on your horse.  Stand behind him on a stool, and look at the lateral balance of the saddle, to include the panels.  Think “mirror image” when comparing one side to the other. Unless you have had your saddle professionally adjusted, you will probably observe that the saddle does not sit “squarely” on his back—the left side will be lower than the right, or vice versa. Or the saddle will look crooked.   Assuming you have a new saddle, not previously conformed to another horse, the “crookedness” you are seeing is due to his back asymmetry, and can only be corrected by adjusting the panels accordingly.

Confirm this step dynamically and have someone watch you ride at all the paces in both directions.  If the saddle consistently lurches to one side, bounces up and down in the back, and/or moves forward onto the shoulders, you need to have a qualified professional evaluate your situation.

STEP #10—HORSE RESPONSE

Outside of a sore back, the ways that your horse expresses his “feelings” about his saddle’s fit are infinite in number.  Some behavioral signs are obvious, others are more subtle.   Below are some, but not all, behaviors that may disappear when you correct or improve your saddle’s fit.

Do not assume that these behaviors relate to training until you have had gone through the previous 9 steps and are confident of your saddle’s fit.    By following these carefully, especially in more complex situations, you will then be able to consult with a professional and eliminate the possibility that your saddle is contributing to performance and comfort issues.  By correcting the weaknesses in your saddle’s fit, your horse’s behavior will tell you almost immediately that he is more comfortable and happy in his work.

VADA News

Hello All!

We are off to a great start with the organizing of the championship show in October thanks to the wonderful people already committed to working at the show (and lots are riding, too!)  This proves that the VADA has one of the best volunteer workforces in the region!  Thank you so much to all who have contacted me and donated their precious time!  Now, let's keep this ball rolling!...there are still jobs to fill and I need all of you to consider lending a hand.  I am available at any time to explain what we have to offer our volunteers, so don't hesitate! We have scribing, scoring, test running, gate keeping (remember, this is for championship classes!) and a variety of odd jobs that can match any volunteer's schedule or references.

We like to take care of our volunteers, too, so remember that anyone giving more than 1 full day will be offered a hotel stay (usually with another volunteer), and I am working on being able to provide vegetarian choices to the workers during lunch.  I am also still looking for an interested party who would like to play lunch host for our scribes and judges. No culinary degree required, just an ability to provide a hot/cold lunch (soups and sands. or salads).  We can provide this person with a room, a daily stipend, and food expenses paid, so let me know if this is up your alley!

Alright, I'm off now...don't forget to take a look at the Volunteer Incentive Program on page 26 of your purple book!...Look and see what how the VADA would like to show its appreciation for our volunteers!

Lightbulb Jokes for Horses & Horsepeople

HOW MANY HORSEPERSONS DOES IT TAKE TO CHANGE A LIGHTBULB?

WESTERN PLEASURE RIDERS: Oh, my God, someone fix that bulb, I have to have light so that my silver and spangles all glow to their best and so that all the highlighter on Old Peanut Head makes his nose look so smooth and sparkly, and oh, my diamond studs have to flash in the light, you know, so oh, someone has to fix it. Oh, maybe you without all the silver on your saddle, obviously you can't ride, you can do it.

ENDURANCE RIDER: Light bulb? Do you mind, I'm trying to get my horse's pulse/respiration/hydration levels down to respectable levels. Once that is done, I have another 50 miles to go before I can even think about changing a light bulb.

DRESSAGE QUEEN: Change a light bulb? Are you joking? I couldn't possibly be expected to subject myself to such a menial task. Change it yourself. Oh, and wash your hands when you are finished. The very thought!

CLASSICAL DRESSAGE QUEEN: These things cannot be rushed, but must be approached slowly, with great patience, and adherence to the principles laid down by the classical masters, otherwise the light bulb will not attain its
true potential, but will forever just be a shadow of its true self. Never, ever, use any type of gadget when changing the light bulb. That is an offense to the principles of classical light bulb changing.

EVENTERS: Wuss! As soon as my arm is out of this sling broken after falling off at that large stone wall while riding Hell Bent for Leather cross country, I'll change it. Until then, deal with the dark. It'll put hair on your chest. Only dressage riders require lights, anyway.

SHOW JUMPER: Why on Earth would I need to change a light bulb when the whole world knows that the sun shines out of my butt. Why, when I release over a jump, the spectators are practically blinded.

NATURAL HORSEMAN: You must instill respect in the light bulb, so that it sees you as the Alpha light bulb, using "light bulb dynamics" (video set available at $179.00 on my Website). Once you have done this, you will find that there is really no need to change the light bulb at all, but that the  light bulb will, with very little coaxing from you (using patented "light bulb coaxer") designed by me - $99.00 each, for extra $49.99 you get a  introductory video thrown in) will behave as all good light bulbs should.

HUNTER RIDER: Well, I'm waiting for my trainer to tell me exactly how but he's changing light bulbs somewhere else right now.

BACKYARD HORSEMAN: Do I have to do everything??!! Oh yeah, I do, don't I? I'll get to it as soon as I'm done mucking stalls, cleaning and filling the tub, cleaning and filling the water buckets, stacking my hay, setting up for night feeding, cleaning my tack, picking out manure from the paddock, brushing and exercising the horses, and whatever else needs to be done.
HOW MANY HORSES DOES IT TAKE TO CHANGE A LIGHTBULB?

THOROUGHBRED: Who ME?? Do WHAT? I'm scared of light bulbs! I'm outta here!

ARABIAN: Someone else do it. It might get my silky mane dirty and besides, who's gonna read me the instructions?

QUARTER HORSE: Put all the bulbs in a pen and tell me which one you want.

STANDARDBRED: Oh for Pete's Sake, give me the damn bulb and let's be done with it.

SHETLAND: Give it to me. I'll kill it and we won't have to worry about it anymore.

FRIESIAN: I would, but I can't see where I'm going from behind all this mane.

BELGIAN: Put the Shetland on my back, maybe he can reach it then.

WARMBLOOD: Is the 2nd Level Instruction Packet in English? Doesn't anyone realize that I was sold for $75K as a yearling, but only because my hocks are bad, otherwise I would be worth $100K? I am NOT changing lightbulbs. Make the TB get back here and do it.

MORGAN: Me! Me! Me! Pleeease let me! I wanna do it! I'm gonna do it! I know how, really I do! Just watch! My parole officer said it's okay, really! And when we're done we can go over to the neighbors and chase their cats!

APPALOOSA: Ya'll are a bunch of losers. We don't need to change the lightbulb, I ain't scared of the dark. And someone make that dang Morgan stop jumping up and down before I double barrel him.

HAFLINGER: That thing I ate was a lightbulb?
