PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Hi everyone! Though the summer is starting to wind down, SWVADA and the VADA have a lot of dressage events planned. First, we have the North American Junior Young Riders Championships in Lexington, VA. This is an international level competition for our young riders, 16-21. They will compete in show jumping, eventing and dressage. This event will be held August 1-6. Volunteers are still needed. If you can help, please contact Tina Longaker at vadvirag@earthlink.net. You will receive VADA volunteer hours for helping at this event. SWVADA will be holding its next schooling show on August 26. For more information, check the SWVADA Omnibus or contact the secretary, Rebecca Splan (rsplan@vt.edu). We will also be hosting a clinic with Amy McElroy on Sept. 23 and 24. For more info on this, please contact Annette Massey Shaw - (276)656-1112 or saxonvale@kimbanet.com. This should be a very informative clinic so please come out and join us! We have had some terribly hot days this past month and August is typically our hottest month. Please remember to take caution with both yourself and your horses during this time. The heat puts a lot of stress on our bodies, so be careful as you continue to exercise and condition your partners. Have fun riding and try to stay cool!

~Susan Dallas

NEWS & NOTES

  • Meredith McGrath and her Oldenburg mare, Wait for Me "Mia" won one first, 2 seconds and 3 fifths at Dressage at Lexington at second level and a first level free style. Their scores qualify them for BLM championships and the USDF Region I Championship. They were also chosen to ride at the Arthur Kottas Clinic at Ashanti Farm, in Gordonsville the end of July. Arthur Kottas is the former First Chief Rider of the Spanish Riding School In Vienna Austria.

  • Meredith McGrath and her Oldenburg mare, Mia, "Wait For Me", won 2 firsts and 3 seconds at the recognized show in Tyron, N.C. 6/24 - 6/25. They showed second level with scores averaging 60% and received a 68% for their first level freestyle. This will help qualify them for USDF Regional Championships and the BLM free style championships.

  • Nancy Stone and her Friesian gelding, Eef, competed at Dressage at Lexington, earning a 2nd and 3rd at Training level (average ~ 70.75%), and a 2nd and 4th at First Level (average ~ 64.32%), qualifying for BLM and USDF Region I Championships. Now she's just waiting for pigs to fly before she tows a horse trailer nine hours to Allentown, New Jersey!

  • The following is from Ryan Eskridge, member of the 2006 Region 1 Young Rider Dressage Team along with Madison Cloninger, Jennifer Sirrine, and Ana DiGironimo. I am sorry for such short notice, as the NAYRC competition is in two weeks in Lexington, VA Aug. 1-6, but the Region 1 team is trying to get sponsorships for the competition as it is up to us for all payments, fundraisers, and sponsorships. We have a banner that will hold all of the sponsors we receive. I was just wondering if you would be interested in sponsoring your very own Region 1 team in any way, shape, or form. You can reach me, Ryan Eskridge, by email, ryerye1417@hotmail.com, or by cell phone, 803-287-2302 at any time. We would greatly appreciate any help we can get!
