PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Time to shine your boots and break out the white breeches - show season is officially here! SWVADA kicks off their season with the April Ride-A-Test on April 8th and their first schooling show on April 22(white breeches optional!). Annette Massey Shaw is in charge of the ride-a-test. There will be a practice ring set up in addition to the ring for the ride-a-test. This will give you an opportunity to ride in a regulation dressage arena. Also please contact Annette if you can volunteer saxonvale@kimbanet.com. SWVADA's first official show of the season should be lots of fun. Beckie Mitchell will be our judge and Harriet Keys is the manager. I will be your show secretary. You can reach me at sgdallas@ntelos.net and Harriet at skfarm@cox.net.  Please
get your entries in early because we are limiting this show to one ring. The weather is finally starting to feel like spring and I hope you have all been able to get out and ride your horses. I am looking forward to seeing you at the shows and clinics. I have spent many hours typing names in my address book and I am eager to put faces to the names of you that I don't know. Have fun riding and I hope to see you soon.

~Susan Dallas

Green Hill Park : Bob Whitehurst
A stabling guide for use of the GHP stalls has been created. Currently stalls are not locked, they are there to be used by members. Muck buckets and rakes are located in the tack room for cleaning stalls after use.
It will be each individual show manager’s choice whether or not to allow stall usage. Locks for stalls will be provided to manager’s who do not want stalls used at their shows. Fees from stall rental goes to the renting party, not GHP.
A motion was made to charge $15.00 per stall, day-use, for SWVADA shows with no other fees (like a deposit) associated. Motion was made by Gary Goodale, seconded by Laura Nelson. Motion carried.

Hospitality: Blanche Mahoney
Banquet cost approximately $1079.50 to hold this year. Costs for re-scheduling and band added to the normal cost of the banquet.

A list of members from the past 2 years that have not re-joined was circulated at the meeting and prior to that to all board members to get input on what people knew about why those people have not re-joined. The remaining names will be contacted by Pat Bevan.

VADA: Susan Dallas, Sarah Denham, Laura Nelson, Jeanette Shires
Has not been another meeting yet. They are trying to organize for April.

Video Library: Gabi Hooten
Nothing new.

Junior/Young Rider: Nancy Stone, Sarah Denham
No business.

Old Business:
Omnibus has been published. There are a few mistakes. Volunteer hours have NOT been raised to 6 hours. Rebecca would like someone else to take over publishing the omnibus for 2007.

New Business:
Members will have to declare what category they want their scores to count in this year. Rider/horse combinations may only choose 1 category in each of the Schooling and Recognized Show Divisions. Ellen Aiken will create a declaration form, available at shows or from her, for each person to fill out and return to her.
Insurance:  Annette has been kind enough with her insurance experience to ‘take over’ the business of SWVADA’s insurance. There have been lots of changes and new regulations/requirements set forth in the recent past. These changes are important and need a professional licensed in the state of VA to really be sure SWVADA is getting the coverage that we need for all the activities we do. Gary Goodale made a motion that SWVADA retain a commercial insurance agent to handle SWVADA’s insurance needs. Seconded by Pat Nelson. Motion carried.

Meeting adjourned at 9:11 pm

Respectfully submitted,

Jeanette Shires, Secretary

NEWS & NOTES

  • Here comes show season!
SWVADA's spring show is coming right up on April 22.  Hmmm. . . . let's call it SWVADA's Triple S! Are you and your horse ready?  I hope to see lots of you buffed and polished and riding into the arena that day.If you are among those of us who are not in a show mode right now, I would still love to see your smiling face at Green Hill helping us put on the show! For this one ring show, we need morning and afternoon scribe, scorer, runner/steward, someone to collect money for available
snack food, announcer, and perhaps one all-purpose spare. All of these jobs, if done for half a day, will cover any volunteer obligation.
Please check your calendar, and email me! Susan Dallas is the secretary, and we promise to make it fun!
Harriet Keys, Manager, SWVADA's Triple S!

  • The Banquet was, as always, a great success. The food was wonderful, the Auctioneer was hilarious, members were dressed up and looking good!  Rumor has it that Harriet Peterson had to rent a U-Haul to carry home her loot. Kudos to those who managed to stay out late enough to dance to the DJ! Many thanks to Blanche for organizing a great night.

  • Attention Competitors for the 2006 Show Season:  There have been some significant changes in how the SWVADA awards will be structured this year which we hope will be more equitable for our competitors at all levels.  These have been described in your new omnibus, so please read them carefully.  There are a number of new awards, and the Horse of the Year awards have now been divided into divisions:  Adult Amateur, Junior/Young Rider, and Open.  Riders may compete in only ONE of these divisions, and they must meet certain requirements for the AA and Jr/YR divisions (see p. 24 in the omnibus for more details).  They must also notify the points chairperson in writing (no faxes, e-mails, or phone calls) if they wish to compete in the AA or Jr/YR division.  A form for this is being developed, and it will be available for downloading from our web site soon.  We will also make it available at shows.  You do NOT need to decide on or declare a division before you go to your first show of the season.  If you do not declare a preference by the deadline of Nov. 30th (same as for submitting recognized scores), you will automatically be placed in the Open Division.

One error appears on p. 22 re. volunteer hours--the required number is still 4, not 6 as stated.  Also, the volunteer forms are no longer REQUIRED from individual competitors, IF the show managers elect to send in lists from their events; check with the individual show managers.  It is, however, ultimately the competitor's responsibility to ensure documentation of their volunteer work.

This year will be a challenge for me and for you as we adjust to this new system. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions, but please try to be patient as we sort out any issues that may arise from a more complicated system.

    Good luck at the shows!

    Ellen Aiken, Points Chairperson
